Search

Find a recipe by any word in it, and add groceries without leaving the page you’re on.

  1. Press /, or tap the search icon in the navigation bar. On a recipe page, you can also tap one of its tag pills, which opens search already filtered to that tag.
  2. Type a word or two: part of a title, an ingredient, a tag, a category, or something from a recipe’s description.
  3. Tap a result to open that recipe. On a keyboard, use the arrow keys to highlight one and press Enter.

The results update as you type.

What search looks at

Every word you type has to appear somewhere in a recipe: its title, description, category, tags, or ingredients. Parts of words count, so chick finds chicken, and capitalization doesn’t matter. Neither do accents or curly quotes: jalapeno finds jalapeño, and crème brûlée finds a recipe spelled creme brulee.

Recipes that match in the title come first, then matches in the description, category, tags, and ingredients. Each result shows the recipe’s title and its category. Up to eight recipes show at once, so add a word to narrow a long list.

Closest matches. When you type two or more words and no recipe has all of them, search shows the recipes that have the most of them instead, under a Closest matches heading.

No matches shows when no recipe fits your search and there’s nothing else to offer.

Filter by tag or category

When a word you type is the name of a tag or category in your kitchen, a Filter by tag: or Filter by category: row appears at the top of the results. Take it, and that word becomes a pill in the search box. A pill is stricter than a typed word: it shows only recipes that carry that tag or sit in that category. See Filter from the search overlay for how pills work.

Add to your grocery list

If you’re a member of the kitchen, search also offers what you’ve typed as a grocery item, under Add to grocery list. It lists up to four ingredients whose names match. When none match and you haven’t taken a filter, it offers exactly what you typed. Tap a row and it goes onto your list: the row reads ✓ Added!, or ✓ Already on your list, and search closes.

The grocery rows sit below the recipes when a recipe’s title matches, and above them otherwise. The first row that isn’t a filter starts out highlighted. So when the grocery rows are on top, pressing Enter straight away adds that item rather than opening a recipe. Custom items covers where an added item lands.

Search works without a connection too. See Shopping without a signal for the not saved mark it shows while you’re offline.
