The iPhone app (coming soon)

The Mirepoix iPhone app isn’t available yet. It’s coming, but it isn’t in the App Store, and there’s no way to download it or sign up for it today. Until it arrives, install Mirepoix from Safari to put it on your home screen. This page describes what the app will add once it’s out.

What it is

The iPhone app is the Mirepoix website in an app of its own, with Recipes, Menu, Pantry, and Groceries as tabs along the bottom. Every page works as it does on the web. A change you make in the app reaches your other devices and the other members of your kitchen, and theirs reach the app.

Everything below is what the app adds beyond the website.

The Groceries widget

Keep your shopping list on the Home Screen, the Lock Screen, or in StandBy. Add it the way you add any widget: look for mirepoix in the widget gallery, where the widget is called Groceries.

Where Size What it shows
Home Screen or StandBy Small How many items are left to buy, and the next 3
Home Screen Medium The count and the next 6 items, in two columns, with their aisles and amounts
Home Screen Large The count and the next 12 items, with their aisles and amounts
Lock Screen Rectangular The count and the next 2 items
Lock Screen Circular The count
Lock Screen Inline One line, such as “5 groceries”

Siri and Shortcuts

Say these to Siri. Each one needs “mirepoix” in it. The grocery and Pantry ones do their work without opening the app, and Siri tells you how it went.

Say What happens
“We’re out of something in mirepoix” Siri asks “What are you out of?” Say olive oil, and it goes on your grocery list. A name your kitchen doesn’t have yet is added as one of its own.
“We’ve got plenty of something in mirepoix” Siri asks “What have you got plenty of?” Say rice, and it comes off your grocery list and is marked stocked, so the Pantry asks about it again in a week, as 1 week under Have it does — unless it’s set to Don’t ask, which goes back to Not asking. A name your kitchen doesn’t know changes nothing, and Siri says so.
“Do we have eggs in mirepoix” Says whether eggs are on hand, on your shopping list, or due for a check, or that there’s no record of them.
“Add to my mirepoix list” or “Add to my grocery list in mirepoix” Siri asks what to add. Name one thing or several, such as “eggs, lemons, and olive oil”.
“Check off an item in mirepoix” Siri asks “Which item?” Say milk, and it’s checked off your grocery list. If more than one item matches, Siri asks which.
“What’s on my mirepoix list” Says how many items are on your grocery list and how many are checked off, then names up to five still to buy, in list order, and how many more there are.
“Open Groceries in mirepoix” Opens the app on that tab. Menu, Recipes, and Pantry work the same way, and so do “Show my Groceries in mirepoix” and “mirepoix Groceries”. Siri also knows Groceries as your grocery list or shopping list.
“Search in mirepoix” or “Find a recipe in mirepoix” Siri asks what you’re looking for, then the app opens search with your words already in it and the results showing.

What Siri says

When it works, Siri says your kitchen’s own answer, such as “Milk is on your list.” or “Rice is stocked, due again in a week.” Otherwise it says why:

What happened What Siri says
No signal, on an add “You’re offline. Open the app to save it for later?” (see below)
No signal, on anything else “You’re offline, so that didn’t go through.”
A change went out, but no answer came back “I’m not sure that went through. Open the app to check.”
A question went out, but no answer came back “No answer yet. Try again in a moment.”
The app hasn’t been opened since it was installed, you’re signed out of it, or it needs to reconnect “Open the app once to connect Siri.”
Your iPhone has restarted and hasn’t been unlocked since “Unlock your iPhone once, then try again.”
Too many requests at once “Busy right now. Try again in a moment.”
The app needs an update to do this “Update the app to use this.”
Siri offered a name from the kitchen the app was in before it switched “That’s from another kitchen. Try again.”

An add with no signal. When Siri asks to open the app, go ahead, and the app saves each item on your iPhone and adds it once it can reach your kitchen again, the way changes you make without a signal go up later. If you don’t, nothing is added. Then Siri says how each item went, with milk as the item:

What happened What Siri says
Saved to send later “Saved milk. It’ll reach your grocery list as soon as it can be sent.”
Saved, to add once your sign-in is confirmed “Saved milk. It’ll be added once your sign-in is confirmed.”
It’s on your list “Added milk to your grocery list.”
The app has no kitchen open “Open your kitchen in the app, then try again.”
You’re signed out of the app “Sign in to the app first, then try again.”
The app is in a different kitchen from when you asked “The app is in another kitchen now, so nothing was added.”
Nothing was added Why, such as “You’re offline, so nothing was added.”

In the Shortcuts app, each of these is an action you can build into your own shortcuts: We’re Out Of, We’ve Got Plenty Of, Do We Have, Add to List, Check Off, What’s on the List, Open Tab, and Search. A shortcut can fill in the item for you, so one tap adds milk without Siri asking. Add to Groceries, the older add, is still there too: it opens the app to add the item, and says the same things as an add with no signal.

Add with Siri through Reminders

Siri can already add to a list in Apple’s Reminders app, several things in one breath, without you naming an app. Turn this on, and the app moves what lands on one Reminders list onto your grocery list.

  1. In the app, tap mirepoix, then your initials at the top of the menu, to open your Account page.
  2. Under iPhone app, turn on Add with Siri through Reminders.
  3. When iOS asks, allow mirepoix full access to your reminders.
  4. Pick a list, then tap Done.

The row now names the list you picked, and the items already on it move onto your grocery list.

Pick a list named Groceries. If you have one, the picker starts with it selected. Siri knows it as your grocery list, so you can say “Add eggs, lemons and olive oil to my grocery list” without naming an app. Siri adds to that list in Reminders, and mirepoix moves them onto your grocery list. Any list you can change works too: say its name in place of “my grocery list”.

Which phrase does what. With “mirepoix” in it, as in “Add to my grocery list in mirepoix”, Siri asks the app itself, as in the table above. Without it, Siri adds to Reminders, and the app picks the items up from there.

What happens to the reminders

A shared list. If the list is shared with other people in Reminders, what they add moves onto your grocery list too, and deleting it removes it from the list for everyone. The row always says so: “If this list is shared, items others add move into Mirepoix and disappear from Reminders for everyone.”

When items move

With no signal, nothing moves, and the reminders wait in Reminders for the next time.

What the row says

The row shows What it means
The list’s name under the switch It’s on, and items move from that list.
Checking… The app hasn’t answered yet.
Open Settings, in place of the switch The app doesn’t have access to your reminders: you didn’t allow it, or you took it away. Tap Open Settings, allow full access to Reminders on mirepoix’s page there, then come back to the app. If you’d already picked a list, it’s on again. Otherwise, turn it on.
“Reminders access is restricted on this iPhone.” Something on your iPhone, such as Screen Time or a device-management profile, doesn’t allow access to Reminders, so there’s no switch.
“The list you chose is gone. Choose another.” The list was deleted, or can’t be found, so the setting turned itself off. Turn it on to pick another.
“1 reminder is too long to import”, or “3 reminders are too long to import” Those reminders are over 100 characters, so they’re staying in Reminders. Shorten them there.

Turn it off

The app keeps the list you chose only on your iPhone. Data and privacy says what it reads from Reminders.

Tap a link to a Mirepoix recipe, or a Menu, Pantry, or Groceries page, in Messages, Mail, or Notes, and it opens in the app instead of Safari. So does one scanned from a QR code.

Other Mirepoix links still open in Safari, including print pages, Kitchen Settings, and Mirepoix’s front page.

Spotlight and Handoff

These recipe entries stay on your iPhone and aren’t added to any public search index. The app forgets them when you sign out or switch kitchens.

Quick actions

Touch and hold the app’s icon on the Home Screen to jump straight to Recipes, Menu, Pantry, or Groceries. Each opens that tab at its top.

Save a recipe from Safari

The app adds mirepoix to Safari’s Share menu, so you can save a recipe page to import later.

  1. Open a recipe page in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share button.
  3. Tap mirepoix.

The sheet names the page and says it’s saved to your kitchen and waiting in Pending imports, then closes itself. The recipe waits under Pending Imports at the top of your recipes list, the same place the import bookmarklet saves to. Open it there, and Mirabel asks before importing anything.

Sharing only saves the page; it doesn’t start an import. It uses the app’s sign-in, so sign in to the app first. It saves to the kitchen the app is in.

Apple Watch

The watch app comes with the iPhone app and shows your grocery list on your wrist. It works through your iPhone: the watch shows the list your iPhone last sent it, and your iPhone does the checking off and adding.

Signing out of the app on your iPhone clears the list from your watch, which then says Sign in to mirepoix on your iPhone.
