Acknowledgements
Mirepoix stands on the work of a great many people who chose to share it. Open-source projects, public data sets, and a few generous services do much of the heavy lifting behind every recipe, shopping list, and nutrition panel. This page thanks each of them, links to their home, and says what Mirepoix uses them for. Where a license asks for its text to travel with the work, that text is reproduced here too. Mirepoix itself is distributed under the O’Saasy License.
The foundation
- Ruby is the language Mirepoix’s server is written in.
- Ruby on Rails is the web framework the whole app is built on — every page, form, and sign-in runs through it.
- Hotwire — Turbo and Stimulus — makes pages feel quick. It updates a page in place when another cook in your kitchen changes something, and gives buttons and editors their behavior.
- SQLite stores your kitchen: recipes, ingredients, menus, and shopping lists.
- Solid Queue, Solid Cache, and Solid Cable run background work such as Mirabel’s replies, keep frequently used results close at hand, and carry the live updates between devices.
- Puma and Thruster serve Mirepoix’s pages to your browser.
- acts_as_tenant helps keep each kitchen’s recipes and lists inside that kitchen.
Recipes, photos, and sharing
- Redcarpet turns the Markdown in your recipe steps, notes, and footers into formatted text, and sets curly quotes and proper dashes.
- libvips, through ruby-vips and ImageProcessing, reads each recipe photo’s size, converts imported PNG and WebP photos to JPEG, and makes the smaller thumbnails.
- rqrcode draws the QR codes for signing in on another device, for the back-link beside the title of a printed recipe, and for the one at the top of a printed grocery list.
- rubyzip builds the ZIP file when you export your kitchen, and reads a ZIP when you import one.
- Nokogiri reads the web pages Mirabel opens for you, so she can find the recipe inside.
- WebAuthn Ruby makes passkey sign-in work.
Fonts
Both typefaces are distributed under the SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1.
- Outfit, by The Outfit Project Authors, is the typeface you read throughout Mirepoix on screen.
- Instrument Serif, by The Instrument Serif Project Authors, sets the display headings on printed recipes.
AI
Claude, by Anthropic, is the model behind Mirabel. It answers your questions about Mirepoix and turns recipe text or a link into a draft through AI import.

Ingredient-phrase-tagger training data
When you import a recipe, Mirepoix can often read a line like “2 cloves garlic, minced” into its amount, its ingredient, and its prep note on its own, with no AI. The next two sources taught it how.
Mirepoix’s deterministic ingredient-line parser is trained on a dataset that combines sentences from several sources. The sentences drawn from the New York Times ingredient-phrase-tagger project are released under the Apache License, Version 2.0. The notice below references that license by URL; read the full license text at the linked address.

Ingredient parser
The parser’s token-and-label annotations — strangetom’s relabeling applied across every training row, together with its own manually labeled sentences — come from strangetom/ingredient-parser, released under the MIT License.

Nutrition data
The calories, macros, and gram weights in Mirepoix’s ingredient catalog are what its nutrition panels are built from.
Nearly all of Mirepoix’s nutrition data comes from the USDA’s FoodData Central, released into the public domain under CC0 1.0 Universal — no permission required. USDA requests, but does not require, this citation:
U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service. FoodData Central, 2026.
https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/
Where FoodData Central has no honest match for a prepared product, the catalog entry uses the nutrition label of a real product instead. Several of those labels, including the ones behind achiote paste and crispy fried onions, come from Open Food Facts, a collaborative, open database of food products. Open Food Facts data is available under the Open Database License.
The weight of one gō, the Japanese rice-cooker cup, on the catalog’s raw rice entries comes from the Japan Rice and Rice Industry Association’s okomenavi.jp.
Text shaping
Mirepoix’s server-side image processing uses HarfBuzz for text shaping, distributed under the MIT (“Old MIT”) License.
HarfBuzz is licensed under the so-called "Old MIT" license. Details follow.
